New English Interiors
Of the countless interior design trends that sweep through our homes year-on-year, there is on that endures; the ever-evolving English style. An inspiration to people across the world, it is a style rich in colour, pattern and personality.
In New English Interiors, writer Elizabeth Metcalfe, together with photographer Dean Hearne, survey 22 houses belonging to some of Englands most exciting creatives, from interior designers and illustrators to artists and antique dealers. For them, their homes are visual mood boards and canvasses to experiment, offering an individual take on a classic style. For some, these homes have been 30 years in the making; for others the journey has just begun.

‘Moorish Maze’ by Rapture & Wright (on cushion)
It’s always wonderful to discover a brand that creates patterns we love, but that also share our ethos of championing craft. Rapture & Wright are such a brand, operating from one of the few remaining handprint studios in the UK. Their fabrics and wallpapers are printed using small scale, artisanal production techniques creating personal and subtly unique patterns where the print reflects the hand of the maker. I love to see these traditional techniques being protected for generations to come by using them to create highly relevant contemporary designs.
Rapture & Wright’s ‘Moorish Maze’ is a favourite, inspired by Moorish decoration of the Alhambra. It’s a design that reveals itself as you approach it; from a distance it appears as a simple graphic pattern, but as you look at the detail you see the intricacy within the design, the multiple layers of colour building to create a design that’s both abstract and rhythmic. The layers of colour make it a versatile design that’s easy to scheme, acting as graphic and contemporary moment, that is reminiscent of historic small scale coral patterns.

We Are Makers is a coffee table magazine that celebrates the stories of makers, artists and craftspeople from around the globe and we were very excited to be include on Edition Four. Kate and Jack are doing a great thing by highlighting all the work that goes into hand made products.

WORLD OF INTERIORS October 2019
Mother Nature is a pivotal presence at Rapture and Wright’s Gloucestershire workshop. Native flora and fauna are a core inspiration for the design duo‘s hand-printed patterns (‘Here, we see the weed as a thing of beauty,’ stresses co-founder Peter Thwaites). But the studio also utilises carefully chosen wetland species, a series of ponds and a willow-tree plantation to filter out pollutants from the production process.
