Since founding Rapture & Wright in 2004, our mission has always been to create a different sort of company; one built upon the philosophy of producing beautiful fabrics and wallpapers, well made by hand in our workshop, while minimising our environmental impact.
In-house manufacture and a holistic approach allow us to maintain oversight and control of the entire production process from weaving and printing to dispatch and disposal of waste. Sustainability is part of every decision.
Energy Usage
People and solar power
Hand printing requires precision and expertise but little electricity – the main source of energy being biscuits! – but all manufacture requires power. The electricity for our print production and design studio is provided by solar panels installed on our roof. Since 2022, those panels have generated more electricity annually than the studio and workshop consume.
Printing
We work with our suppliers to formulate water-based inks specifically for our lower-impact production methods, mitigating the need for petrochemicals traditionally used to aid drying in screen printing. We print everything to order for you. This allows us to offer bespoke colour options or change base cloths. Critically, it also eliminates wasted stock.
Linen
A sustainable product starts with the raw ingredients – flax is a hardy plant that requires few pesticides, fertilisers, or irrigation. We source linen yarns from Belgium and northern France, then work with weavers in northern England to develop base cloths suited to our low-impact printing process.
Ecological Ponds
Central to our sustainable print production programme has been the development of our ground breaking “Living Water” system, designed specifically to break down our print waste safely within the natural environment, through a series of living ponds. In addition to cleaning the waste water, new habitats have been generated for a diverse variety of wildlife from insects and butterflies to water birds and larger mammals.
